The Patch Story

Local businessman Frank Apa received Patch, a Shih Tzu, as a puppy. Patch was a sweet, endearing little dog whose ability to connect with people quickly became apparent. He went to work at the Oakville Toyota dealership every day with Mr. Apa and became a true ambassador for the relationship that can develop between people and animals. He became a company companion, mascot and corporate spokes dog with an integral role in the owner’s dealership. He had a positive impact on all of those that had the pleasure of meeting him.

Sadly, Patch passed away in August 2002. To honour his long-time companion Mr. Apa dedicated September to Patch’s memory. Over the month the Oakville Toyota and Lexus of Oakville dealerships raised $13,300 in Patch’s name.  The money was generously donated to the Oakville & District Humane Society. The Society’s Board supported using this donation to develop an education program promoting the importance of the human/animal bond, featuring the dog that represented the ideal role model – PATCH.  In 2003 Mr. Apa's dealerships donated $10,335 to support this ongoing initiative.  To date, Mr. Apa has donated more than $48,000 toward the program.

What is The Patch Challenge?

Oakville teachers and schools are invited to participate in a new free humane education program. When you invite the Oakville & District Humane Society into your classroom, an age appropriate program that encourages children to perform acts of kindness for people and animals will challenge your students.

P
eople and Animals - Together Create Harmony.

Once you register your class on-line you become part of a Town-wide search for the school that can perform the greatest number of challenges and the highest number of acts of kindness. At the end of the school year, if your school has had the greatest number of participants in “The Patch Challenge” combined with having registered the greatest number of acts of kindness, your school will win the challenge. A plaque acknowledging your school’s efforts and a kindness donation will be given to your school library.

How do you register your class?

Use the on-line “Sign Up for The Patch Challenge” form to register your class’ participation in the program or call Community Service Coordinator Heather White at 905-845-1551. The Oakville & District Humane Society staff will be in touch with you to arrange for an in-class session. A Teacher’s Manual will be sent to you directly.

Recognizing individual acts of kindness

Special attention should be paid to those children that demonstrate a true understanding of the goal of The Patch Challenge. If you know of a student or a child who has performed an impressive act of kindness toward another person or animal, you can submit their name and ‘act’ to be considered as part of the challenge. All submissions will be evaluated and at the end of the school year one Oakville child will be recognized for his/her act with The Patch Challenge award.

Parents and/or teachers can submit acts of kindness on-line or mail their submissions to the:
Oakville & District Humane Society,
445 Cornwall Road,
Oakville Ont.
L6J 7S8.
All children whose names/acts have been submitted will receive a recognition card from the Society.

Frank Adopts Max

In July 2006 Frank adopted Max, a 7 month old Shih Tzu, from the Oakville and District Humane Society. Max was an instant part of Frank's family, at home and at work. We are extremely sad to report that Max has passed away. He will be missed by all.
