History & Philosophy
Part of the Society’s mandate is humane education, and we have programs in the school system that reach approximately 5,000 school age children each year. The Kindness Club was another way to establish an opportunity for children to be a part of the shelter community.
The first Kindness club started in 1982 and it attracted more than 110 children. It became an extremely popular program. Unfortunately, due to the lack of financial and human resources the club ended in 1995. In 2004, the Kindness Club was re-stablished in its current eight week format. This was made possible due to a grant from the Community Foundation of Oakville: Ontario Endowment for Children and Youth in Recreation.
The Focus of the Club is to teach children about animals using “kindness” as the recurring theme.
What do we do?
We meet once a week for a period of eight consecutive weeks. Meetings are approximately an hour in length. During the meetings the children have access to appropriate animals within the shelter and also with animals that may visit us as part of our weekly topic. The club members are asked to complete an act of kindness and report back to the group at each meeting. The aim is to build a habit of being kind and that each child’s kindness will encourage others to return their kindness,
Club members also choose an animal in the shelter that they would like to follow the progress of. Finding homes for the animals in the shelter is very important and there is a lesson that the children learn throughout the eight weeks about the animals that continue to wait for a new home. These reasons are discussed and examined on a weekly basis.
Each week’s theme is different and many crafts, games and activities are done to reinforce the objectives of each lesson. We host many informative guest speakers, such as, a reptile expert, veterinarian, a dog trainer, an exotic animal expert etc. Generally the content includes: animal safety, dogs, cats, small animals, fish, birds and wildlife.
How old do you have to be?
There are two groups that meet. The first group is called the Junior Kindness Club and is geared towards children that are 6 years of age to 8 years of age.
The second group is called the Senior Kindness Club. The children in this group are 9 years of age to 12 years of age. It is not uncommon for us to have children 13 years old in the senior group also.
How many children are in each session?
The Kindness Club is small, there are only ten children in each session. The program is run by a group of volunteers and headed by a staff member.
