Education Programs & Tours

The Oakville & District Humane Society offers FREE educational programs for children in the Town of Oakville aged 3-18 years. Programs are also available in Milton for the nominal fee of $25.00/sesson.

Preschool Children

Ages: 3-4 years old

Our programs for preschool children are interactive and fun. Children will learn about responsible pet ownership, safety around animals, and lending a helping hand. A small animal is brought to the school for the children to interact with.

Presentation: Approximately 30 minutes

Primary and Secondary children
Ages: 5-18 years old

Our programs follow the Ontario School Curriculum. Topics include: animal appreciation, responsible pet ownership, wildlife and habitats, pet overpopulation, animal cruelty, animal rights and the law, and much more. We will also design a presentation to suit your needs. An animal can also be requested to come to class for the children to interact with.

The Patch Challenge program compliments the Ontario curriculum and delivers the following learning expectations for primary students:

  • Effective communication
  • Making sense of simple written materials
  • Listening to stories and poetry
  • Sorting and classifying objects
  • Counting
  • Demonstrating curiosity and care for the natural world
  • Demonstrating an awareness of health and safety practices
  • Demonstrating a positive attitude towards themselves and others

Presentation: Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour

Tours

The Oakville & District Humane Society gives tours to a variety of different organizations, including Brownies, Beavers, Sparks, Scouts, Boys Club etc. Our tour consists of a discussion about the shelter and our role in the community, followed by a video geared towards responsible pet ownership, and then ending with a tour of the shelter. The presentation is an hour in length.

There are a very limited number of tours available between Kindness Club sessions only..  The cost is $25.00. Bookings should be made at least a month in advance in order to guarantee a spot. To book please contact the Community Outreach and Education Department at 905-845-1551 ext. 14.

Most shelters offer educational programs for their community. If you do not live in our area, please contact the shelter in your area for further details.
