Eli
Breed: Domestic Short Hair - White
Sex: Neutered Male
Age: Approximately 2 years old
Disposition: Sensitive, sweet and a bit of a worry wart
@ Shelter: 7/19/10
|
|
Description:
Eli is more sensitive than his sister - Lily. He likes things a little more quiet and routine. He likes to use his scratching post and will vocalize when he wants food or water. He and his sister were surrendered to the shelter when the animals developed asthma and a new puppy came to the house. While Eli was more comfortable around the dog ...he would prefer not to live with one. He likes his people and will follow them and likes to hang out in the room where you are. He is a lovely boy and is hoping for a great home for him and his sister.

Lily
Breed: Domestic Short Hair - Brown Tabby
Sex: Spayed Female
Age: Approximately 2 years old
Disposition: Friendly
@ Shelter: 7/17/10
|
|
Description:
Lily came to the shelter with her brother Eli. The family decided to get a dog and unfortunately Lily and Eli were not happy about having a dog for a buddy. They became very unhappy. Lily is a playful girl. She is a fastidious cat who is used to having two litter boxes which are cleaned daily. She doesn't enjoy the car and will vocalize when you start off but settles down once the journey is underway. She really is a lovely girl and would like a family without a dog where she and her brother can spend the rest of their lives playing and being affectionate with their new people.

Description:
Kittens! Kittens! Kittens! What could be more fun than the bouncing bundle of joy that is a kitten? Always playful and irresistibly cute, they make a lively addition to any home! They are guaranteed to keep you entertained for hours on end with their constant crazy antics and become wonderful companions for your family. In general, kittens will fit into homes that have other pets as they are young and adaptable (just make sure your pets are ready for a rambunctious sibling!). Kittens under the age of 6 months aren't highly recommended for families with small children due to their sometimes over the top style of play and because their true personalities aren't fully developed at this age.

Oliver II
Breed: Jack Russel Terrier - Tri colour
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: 2 years, 10 months old
Disposition: Smart and energetic
@ Shelter: July 2010
|
|
Description:
Oliver was surrendered to the shelter when his owner passed away. He is a sweet and intelligent boy looking for his forever home.
He must go to an Adult Only Home (Children 18 and over) due to some resource guarding issues that he is currently working on, as well as potential reactivity on leash.
He must go to obedience school, as this will help build a healthy relationship with his new owners. This will also help him with his resource guarding, as well as walking nicely on a leash. He's a smart boy and already knows sit, and will jump up on your lap if you ask him to!
Living situation must be considered as he can be quite vocal as we've seen here at the shelter. We also know that in his past home he barked at the window.
If you think that he would make a great addition to your family, come on down to the shelter to meet him!

Diva
Breed: Shepherd X Border Collie
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 8 months old
Disposition: Brilliant and Loving
@ Shelter: June 2010
|
|
Description:
Diva was surrendered to shelter by her owners as they were no longer able to care for her. She is a fun loving girl who loves the people in her inner circle...her special folk. She is a little reserved at first and she may bark at you when you first meet her in the run. Lots of the dogs do that though. Having people stare can be quite scary for the dog until she gets to know you.
Being a Border Collie X means she is full of energy! This girl will need a regular routine of exercise comprised of nice long scenic walks, fun in the park... (she is a social girl!)... and training to burn her mental energy.
Brilliant and eager! Diva loves, loves, loves to learn with you. Training is the easiest way to tap into her fun and goofy side. She is brilliant but is also guaranteed to make you smile and giggle as she works her way through with problem solving. Her new family will have to be sure to fill her life with fun learning games!
Diva requires an ADULT ONLY home due to lack of experience with children and her discomfort with handling from strangers.
Training school a must to help her use that absolutely brilliant mind.Continued doggie education such as agility is highly recommended because Diva has the mind that keeps going, and going, and going...
Diva does has a high potential of guarding the front door, so her new owners will need to set her up with a healthy routine right from the get go. Genevieve, our behaviour coordinator will send home a plan on how to do this and will include a private session to help! Diva's obedience training will also come in handy in this department!
We think that she is likely to be good with other dogs as her previous owners did take her to the dog park and she has shown positive behaviours around other dogs while at shelter.

Carbon
Breed: Domestic Short Hair - Charcoal Grey
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: Approximately 4 years
Disposition: Friendly
@ Shelter: April 2010
|
|
Description:
Carbon was found as a stray in April, 2010.
Unfortunately, Carbon was living outdoors before he came to the shelter and contracted FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) which is essentially the cat equivalent to HIV in humans. But don't worry, it's nothing that people or other species can catch, so they can live long and wonderful lives with their people friends and other animals friends, like dogs, hamsters and bunnies; just not other cats. FIV passes through the saliva, so a fight between cats, even if it's in play, can possibly transfer the virus. It's safer for a cat like Carbon to live in a home where he would be the only cat or where the other cats are FIV positive. He needs to live with a family who is dedicated to keeping him strictly indoors and who are prepared for keeping up with regular vet care including annual exams and vaccines. Anyone who is considering taking Carbon home should speak with their vet ahead of time to discuss any concerns they may have with taking on a cat who is FIV positive. More detailed information about FIV will be provided during the adoption meeting as well.

Mable
Breed: Beagle
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 7 years
Disposition: Sweet and Loving
@ Shelter: June 2010
|
|
Description:
Came to shelter from another rescue with no known history.
A very sweet girl with lots of love to give. She is a little shy and just needs a little time to warm up to new situations.
Adult only as she is not comfortable with body handling. Mable is looking for a quiet home where she can take her time adjusting to new things in life, including handling with her new owners.
Training is mandatory as it will help her to learn to focus in situations that may make her nervous. This is also a great way for her to bond with and build a happy & healthy relationship with her new Pet Parents!
Living conditions are a consideration due to her breed and their tendency to be vocal.
Mable is likely to be best as the only dog in the family.
Check out a short video of Mabel on our home page!

Lyle
Breed: Hound - Tricolour
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: approximately 2 years
Disposition: Shy and intelligent
@ Shelter: June 2010
|
|
Description:
Lyle came to the shelter as a stray. He is a shy boy who will need a patient family who are excited to work with him through training. Training school is a must for Lyle as this will help him to work through fearful situations by distracting him doing something he enjoys. Lyle is very food motivated which will make training easy and enjoyable. He already knows many commands such as sit, down, speak, and paw. Training school will also help him develop a strong bond and understand the leadership role of his new family.
Lyle must be in a home with ADULTS ONLY (everyone must be 18 and over) since he gets very uncomfortable with handling and physical interactions.

Ben
Breed: Terrier Cross
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: approximately 10 years old
Disposition: relaxed and sweet
@ Shelter: February 2010
|
|
Description:
Our fantastically adorable mature Ben came to our shelter as a stray with no known history. He is an absolute sweetheart who is looking for his retirement home. Ben has lost just about all of his teeth with his dental surgery and will need his owners to consider this when feeding him food and treats...and he sure loves his treats!!!
Ben absolutely loves to go for walks and then enjoy a nice breeze while resting on a bench. Ben is likely to be good with other animals but is not really intereted in playing with them, just hanging out.
Ben is hard of hearing and can no longer see very well so quick movements can startle him and he is not great at responding to voice commands or communication but does enjoy a good snuggle with the right person!
Ben has proven to be fairly vocal in a home (he was fostered for his medical recovery time). This is likely due to his difficulty in seeing and hearing. Ben does like to talk a lot...he will tell you stories about EVERYTHING!!! It is due to this that his living arrangements are a consideration as he is not recommended for apartment living.
Training school is recommended as this will help Ben to bond to his new family but it is not a requirement as Ben is retiring...school is only a bonus!
As Ben is easily startled by quick movements, he requires an ADULT ONLY home. Ben prefers calm, quiet adults.

Princess
Breed: Pug
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: 4.5 years old
Disposition: active and playful
@ Shelter: June 2010
|
|
Description:
Princess came to the shelter as a stray. She is a runner and has been a guest of the shelter on numerous occassions. Princess has proven to be an escape artist while at the shelter as she has magically escaped from her kennel and from the room and found running through the halls. Her new owner(s) must never leave her unattended in a backyard as she is sure to get out.
Princess is a very active, high energy little girl who is looking for someone to keep up with her active mind and body. She is a great deal of fun but has little interest in toys. she is a very fun and playful girl who will keep you laughing for hours at her silly ways!
Princess has a high prey drive and is not recommended for a home with cats or small animals - she is likely best to be the only pet in the home.
An ADULT ONLY home (all family members 18 and over) is required due to her being an escape artist, her high prey drive, her slight discomfort with handling from strangers and her tendency to run away from home.
Obedience Training School is an absolute must as this will help her bond with her new family and teach her the skills that she will need to learn to stay home!!
Living arrangements are a consideration as she is a vocal girl and may prove to be protective over spaces that she believes are hers (such as her backyard)...one more reason to never leave her unattended in the yard!

The minute he got inside though, he was all cuddles. He is very adorable little guy with lots of love to give! If you would like to give this sweetheart a home, please ask about him.

Shawna
Breed: German Shephard Dog
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 1 year
Disposition: Sweet and affectionate
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Shawna originally came to the shelter as a stray, was adopted and unfortunately returned. This was not due to her not being a fabulous dog (because she is!), but due to her not getting along with the other dog in the family.
Shawna is a very sweet girl and social with other dogs outside of her house, but is not recommended to live with other animals. She unfortunately resource guards - quite seriously - from other dogs and was extremely focused on the cats in her previous home. Because of this, Shawna would love to be the only dog in the house, but have regular play dates with doggie friends outside!
An extremely high energy, active dog who is looking for a very active owner to tire her out... or at least to keep up with her!
ADULT ONLY (no one under 18) due to her extreme high activity, resource guarding tendencies and lack of known experience with children.
Shawna is brilliant beyond belief!! So, she must have an owner with a serious interest in training (using positive reinforcement) and absolutely must attend obedience training school with her new owner(s). It is not only critical for her to keep up her sociability but this will help her and her new family to create a strong and healthy positive leadership relationship.
Any prospective new owners must have primary care experience with the Shepherd dog breed or a working breed type.
Overall, Shawna is an extremely loving and affectionate girl who will certainly steal your heart but has some strict special needs in terms of training, owner experience and other animals.

Tessa
Breed: German Shephard Dog
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 2 years old
Disposition: Shy and affectionate
@ Shelter: April 2010
|
|
Description:
Tessa was brought to shelter in April from another rescue organization. Unfortunately, she was not comfortable living amongst other dogs.
She is unable to be viewed in adoption room because the constant flow of the public is very stressful to her; Tessa is a very sensitive shepherd. If you would like to see Tessa, please ask at the front desk, but please read about her first!
Tessa is perhaps the most affectionate Shepherd dog ever! However, she is also an extremely shy girl who is lacking self confidence. Her new family must be prepared to work with her on her confidence building. She will be sent home with some recommended independence and confidence building exercises.
Based on her history, it's clear that Tessa would like to be the only pet in the house. She is okay walking past other dogs on the street and okay to be in close vicinity to them, but prefers to have her own space at home.
Training school is a must for Tessa as she must learn to be confident in public and must develop a happy and healthy positive relationship with her new owner(s).
She does need an ADULT ONLY home (no one under 18) as she is very shy and can easily be overwhelmed. Her prospective owners must also have primary care experience with shepherd dogs. Not only is Tessa a very sensitive shepherd dog who requires lots of patience and understanding, but she is also likely to fall into the trap of repetitive Shepherd dog guarding and barking if in inexperienced hands.
If you are familiar with Shepherd dogs and their beauty, have patience and love to give... Tessa is for you! She is absolutely amazing and loving. A very loyal girl!

Mozart
Breed: Karelian Bear Dog
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: Approximately 1 year old
Disposition: Strong willed and Intelligent
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Mozart came into the shelter as a stray with no known history in May of 2010. He is an unusual dog that you don't see very often - a Karelian Bear Dog which originates from Finland. If interested in Mozart, it is highly recommended that you have previous knowledge on this breed, or educate yourself before considering bringing him into your home.
He is a well-tempered Karelian Bear Dog indeed, but still a Karelian Bear Dog - strong minded and strong willed. Mozart's breed is not recommended for children or for first time owners, so he must go to an ADULT ONLY home (no person under the age of 18). This is also necessary because we have no known history of him with children or in a family setting.
Not for first time dog owners. The Karelian Bear Dog is not recommended for first time owners as they can be aloof at times and difficult to read. They are determined and a little stubborn at times. It is important that their owners and handlers are good at positively communicating with dogs, and this is true also with Mozart.
Obedience Training school a must! Mozart is a brilliant boy who needs much attention in the training department. He is at his best when he is learning while hanging out with his human friends. Training school will also help him and his new owner(s) to develop a healthy positive leadership relationship, which is critical with a strong minded & willed dog such as Mozart.
We highly recommend doing preventative resource guarding exercises to ensure Mozart goes into his home understanding how to share with humans. There hasn't been any particular resource guarding noted with Mozart, but it is always better to be safe than sorry! A program is to be sent home with him.
Mozart is a very confident and intense dog but can also be a very sweet and fun dog, especially for someone who is interested and involved with training. If you look forward to tapping into a dog?s mental abilities, Mozart will knock your socks off with how intelligent he is!!

Carter
Breed: Husky X Border Collie
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 10 months
Disposition: friendly playful
@ Shelter: June 2010
|
|
Description:
Carter came to shelter as a stray. She was a frequent runner from home and was unfortunately not claimed the last time she ended up at the shelter. Carter is a very sweet girl, very "into" her people but as a husky is also more than happy to do things on her own, her own way!
Being a border collie, her mind is very busy and will need constant mental stimulation.
Obedience training school is a must. This will get her off to the right start with some tools to help her become less likely to run away from home and also to build a healthy positive leadership relationship with her new family, another important step towards her being less likely to run.
She requires a family with children 14+ with primary care dog experience. Her new family must have a good understanding of both the Husky and the Border Collie breeds. Experience with these breeds is ideal but must at least demonstrate an understanding of their typical behaviours and needs. Everyone in the household MUST be able to understand the importance of keeping doors closed!
She is interested in toys as is usual for a border collie, but loses interest quickly like a husky.
It is possible she will become quite vocal in her new home, living arrangements should be considered.
Regular routine and consistency in her life will help her to settle in her new home. If you feel she will make a great addition to your family, please ask about her.

Kate, Sawyer and Hurley
Breed: Domestic longhair, and Domestic Shorthair
Sex: Female, Male, Male
Age: Approximately 12 weeks
Disposition: Sweet, gentle and playful
@ Shelter: April 2010
|
|
Description:
Only Sawyer is left! He is missing his brother and sister and can't wait to find a home! These kittens were born with us at the OMHS after their mom, 2 months pregnant, was brought in as a stray in April, 2010. She gave birth only days after she arrived, while she was safely in foster care. Her and her kittens spent all their time in foster care being socialized and getting ready for their permanent homes. These guys are gentle, adventurous, and infinitely curious.
Kittens! Kittens! Kittens under the age of 6 months aren’t highly recommended for families with small children due to their sometimes over the top style of play and because their true personalities aren’t fully developed at this age.

Charlie
Breed: Siamese - Chocolate Point
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: 12 years old
Disposition: sweet and talkative
@ Shelter: June 2010
|
|
Description:
Charlie is a very sweet boy and loudly talkative! What else would you expect from a siamese? He came to the shelter originally as a stray, and was adopted in May. Unfortunately, Charlie gets more talkative when he's alone, so apartment living just wasn't for him. After he first arrived, Charlie did spend some time at the vet to get him back to good health. The poor boy had spent days outside, and he's declawed! He's an older boy, with older cat health. More details about his background and needs will be given during an adoption appointment. His eyesight is not 100% and it is likely that his hearing isn't either. He loves to be with you and cuddle under a shirt or under the blankets. If you're looking to give this wonderful boy a quiet, safe indoor home to retire in, please ask about him.

Ralph
Breed: Chihuahua
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: Approximately 2 years
Disposition: Charming and Friendly
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Ralph came to OMHS as a stray with no known history in May of this year. He is a very sweet Chihuahua with LOTS of personality! Ralph will make you smile for sure with his witty charm! And yes, we mean witty! He is so full of expression, it's as if he is talking to you!
Ralph is much more interested in human interactions than in toys so far. His human friends will have to show him what playing with toys is all about.
He will need to work on housetraining as well as appropriate in-house behaviours. It does not appear as though he has much experience with this. Ralph's new owners should keep in mind that he is likely to urine mark his environment and they may need to help him curb this behaviour. Living conditions may be a consideration for him for his potential marking, but also because Ralph can become quiet vocal at times.
Ralph requires a 10+ family (no children under the age of 10) as he is an adult dog with an unknown history.
Training school is a must for this little man! School will give him the tools to help curb him of his marking behaviour. It will also set him up for success with his new family, by creating a healthy positive leadership bond.

Oscar
Breed: Budgie - Green and Yellow
Sex: Male
Age: Adult
Disposition: Curious and talkative
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Budgies are extremely active and need to stretch their wings and have space for fluttering around the cage. These agile little birds make great companions, however, they are not a short-term commitment. The average lifespan of a budgie is 8 to 10 years and there have been those that have lived as long as 20 years. To ensure your budgie has a long and happy life they will need to be provided with a clean cage, daily exercise, a healthy diet including fresh fruit and vegetables daily plus plenty of activity and companionship. Although birds can share a home with cats and dogs, they should never be left unsupervised. Children should also not be unsupervised with a bird as they can bite if feeling threatened or scared. Budgies adapt well to apartment life, but space should be considered as birds require a cage at least twice their wingspan and it should be longer rather than taller to allow for exercise.

Tristan
Breed: Walker Coonhound
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: Approximately 5 years old
Disposition: Typical Hound!
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Tristan came to OMHS from another shelter with his sister Thalia in May of this year. They were both strays at the previous shelter, so we don't have any history on either one.
Tristan is an absolute sweetheart with much love to give... but is also a typical hound! He follows his nose and is an incredible escape artist. Tristan's new family must keep him entertained, especially when outside. He is very personable and loves his people but as soon as he feels as though he is alone or being ignored, Tristan will begin getting anxious and try to find out a way out, especially from an outdoor enclosure. He will need his new family to be hound dog experienced and familiar with all their particulars.
When playing, Tristan will chase a ball but so far is not likely to retrieve it. This is something his new owners can work on with him. He does love his stuffed toys, however, and will play with those anywhere. Even though he follows his nose, Tristan walks very nicely on leash while wearing his sense-ation harness.
Tristan has demonstrated very mild tendencies to guard his food bowl and although it is very mild, he will be sent home with a program to follow so that he can be set up for success in his new home.
He is loveable and sweet, and can be an affectionate guy, but he does have some moments when he gets very anxious. Tristan's new owners will need to be patient with him and give him some extra time to settle in to a new home. Because of his tendency to have a bit of anxiety, a high potential to sneak out if doors are left ajar, and his mild resource guarding habits, Tristan must go to a family that is ADULT ONLY (no children under 18).
Obedience training school is required for Tristan. He must learn a healthy positive leadership relationship with his new family. Classes will also provide him with the tools to work on any behavioural issues that may pop up along the way as well as around his food bowl, with his anxiety tendencies and preventing him working on his escape artist talent.
Living arrangements may be a consideration as he can be quite vocal at times. If you think you are the right match for Tristan, please ask about him.

Thalia
Breed: Walker Coonhound
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 5 years old
Disposition: Typical Hound!
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Thalia came to OMHS from another shelter with her brother Tristan in May of this year. They were both strays at the previous shelter, so we don't have any history on either one.
Thalia is a sweet girl but also a typical hound! She would much prefer a long walk and some time to "follow her nose" rather than play around with toys. Fortunately, she walks very nicely on leash while wearing her sense-ation harness! She will chase a ball but so far is not likely to retrieve it. This is something her new owners can work on with her!
Overall, she is a very easy going girl but does have the potential to be an escape artist. This is a pretty typical hound behaviour, but it will be something her new family needs to monitor and work on in the future. She is very loveable and sweet girl who, once she's had her long walk and sniffs, can be very cuddly.
Thalia does require an adult only home because she does not have any previous experience with children and has demonstrated food bowl resource guarding tendencies. Her food bowl resource guarding tendencies are mild, but she will be sent home with a program to follow so that she can be set up for success in her new home.
Obedience training school is required for Thalia. She must learn a healthy positive leadership relationship with her new family. Obedience school will also provide her with the tools to work on any behavioural issues that may pop up along the way, her food bowl resource guarding tendencies as well as her potential to be an escape artist.
Thalia would certainly benefit from a family who is hound dog experienced and familiar with all their particulars. At the very least, her new family should be familiar and prepared for living with a hound dog.
Living arrangements may be a consideration as she can be quite vocal at times. If you are the right home for Thalia, please ask about her.

Maxine
Breed: Beagle
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 7 Years old
Disposition: Sweet but nervous
@ Shelter: May 2010
|
|
Description:
Maxine came to OMHS as a stray in May of this year. We have no known history on her because of this, but she is a very sweet and very worried girl. New people and new experiences can be scary for her.
Poor Maxine appears to have had little to no contact with people and doesn't have an understanding of the "normal things" that people do with dogs: playing, snuggling, going for a walks. She will need a calm patient home with family members willing to acknowledge and understand her body language in order to help her become more confident.
So far, Maxine does not appear to have much interest in toys, but she has likely never seen any prior to coming to OMHS. These may be something that she will enjoy in the future. She does like to cuddle, but only after she knows her human well, and this will take time and patience. After a nice long walk, Maxine would love to lay down next to the fire or in a sunny patch on a comfy couch!
She requires an adult only home due to her fearful nature. She is uncomfortable with handling from strange adults, let alone children. And, any applicants MUST demonstrate a good understanding of canine body language and communication.
Training school is required for Maxine so that she can be socialized, learn some useful tools for getting her through tough and scary times and develop a healthy, positive relationship with her new family!
Living arrangements may be a consideration as she is likely to become quite vocal when she is fearful and even once she gets comfortable in her home; as her breed predicts, Maxine may grow to enjoy the sound of her own voice!

Scotty
Breed: Domestic short hair - Brown tabby and white
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: approximately 1 year
Disposition: friendly and playful
@ Shelter: March 2010
|
|
Description:
Scotty was brought to the shelter as a stray in March of 2010. He is a sweet, playful boy looking for a caring home.
When you see him out of his kennel, you will notice he's a bit different than most cats. He has a bit of a tilted head, and sometimes is unbalanced. This is caused by a small polyp in Scotty's ear. The head tilt doesn't affect him or hurt him in any way, Scotty just views the world from a different point of view than most cats. The polyp right now is too small to actually operate on, so at this time it cannot be removed. In the future, it may never get large enough to remove and he could have his tilted head forever. On the other hand, it may get big enough to be surgically removed. Having this done will help with the head tilt, and depending on how big it gets could be a necessary surgery. His new family is going to have to keep this in mind, that he is likely to need a surgery in the future. We highly recommend speaking with your vet about this issue before adopting Scotty. If you are interested in giving this loving cat his forever home, please ask about him.

Mister Webber
Breed: Dwarf Hamster
Sex: Male
Age: Approximately 4 months
Disposition: shy but curious
@ Shelter: February 2010
|
|
Description:
Mister Webber came into the shelter in February when his owner was no longer able to care for him. It appears as though in his four months of life, he didn't recieve too much socializing with his owner, and so, is a little unsure of handling. He will require a dedicated owner to work with him and get him comfortable with people.
Hamsters do make great pets, but aren't for everyone. With an average lifespan being between 1-2 years, these small nocturnal creatures may not require a lot, but are by no means for the lazy owner! They, just like other small animals, should have regular exercise, whether on a wheel or with interactive toys and housing in their cage. Because they are so small and VERY quick, a family should take precautions before socializing them out of their cages, ensuring that the area is escape-proof, remembering that ehy can be difficult to handle and catch. Many types of Hamsters do have a tendency to nip if feeling threatened, but if handled regularly, this behaviour can be worked on. It may come as a surprise to most, but Hamsters are a more suitable pet for older children, and parents should keep this in mind when considering bringing a Hamster into the family.

Hailey
Breed: Collie X Sheltie
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: 7 months
Disposition: Brilliant and Affectionate
@ Shelter: Feb 2010
|
|
Description:
Hailey was brought to the OMHS by her previous owners as they were unable to handle her high activity and training needs. Hailey was also inappropriate for their children.
Hailey is BRILLIANT and extremely AFFECTIONATE with those she trusts and loves. She has demonstrated food and toy resource guarding in her previous home around both humans and other animals. She's a high energy pup with lots to learn about living appropriately with humans! Hailey has undergone extensive training while at shelter but has much more to learn. She will require a gentle, yet confident handler.
Hailey is a sweet girl who must continue to work on her self control, no: jumping, mouthing (puppy nipping), pulling on leash, object or food guarding. Hailey will be sent home with an outline of her progress here and with a plan to continue her learning pattern.
Hailey is NOT for a first time dog owner. She is very fun and sweet but challenging and requires lots of dedication, time and energy!
Hailey is looking for an adult only home (Children 18 and up only) due to her experience in her previous home and due to her resource guarding tendencies.
She will be sent home with a training plan and 2 private training sessions with our OMHS behaviourist is included.
Obedience training school is a must as Hailey absolutely must be properly socialized to other dogs and people as well as learn appropriate behaviours and develop a healthy leadership relationship with her new family.
Continued education, such as agility or flyball, is highly recommended for Hailey after her basic puppy obedience training. Hailey is likely best fit to someone who is very in to sports-like dog training, very energetic and is used to keeping a regular daily routine. Hailey has an extremely active mind and must be continually mentally stimulated as well as plenty of physical exercise / lots of walks to keep her calm and happy! Applicants must demonstrate a good understanding/have experience with working and/or herding dog breeds.

Hart
Breed: Domestic Short Hair - Grey Tabby with White
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: 4 years
Disposition: Sweet
@ Shelter: May 2009
|
|
Description:
Hart came into the shelter as a stray. Though he looks a little bit rough around the edges, deep down he's a sweet, loving kitty.
Unfortunately, Hart was living outdoors before he came to the shelter and contracted FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) which is essentially the cat equivalent to HIV in humans. It's safer for a cat like Hart to live in a home where he would be the only cat or where the other cats are FIV positive. He needs to live with a family who is dedicated to keeping him strictly indoors and who are prepared for keeping up with regular vet care including annual exams and vaccines. Anyone who is considering taking Hart home should speak with their vet ahead of time to discuss any concerns they may have with taking on a cat who is FIV positive. More detailed information about FIV will be provided during the adoption meeting as well.
Hart is on a special calorie control diet, since he's a bit too heavy. His new owners should keep in mind that he may need to continue on a medical diet for some time.

Description:
A few years ago, Sher was surrendered by her owner to another shelter, adopted out, and in February of this year, abandoned by her adoptive family. She hasn't had much stability in her six years of life, and so it will be important that her new family be able to offer her that. Ludwig
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: 1 1/2 years
Disposition: Wild Boy.
@ Shelter: January 2010
|
|
Description:
Ludwig came into the shelter as a stray at the end of January. When he arrived here, we thought he may be a semi-wild cat due to his intense nature. For this reason, he may not be the best suited for a home with young children who can be a bit unpredictible. He would likely do best in a home with older children and adults who will better know how to interact with him. That being said, Ludwig is a great boy, who with each day, is learning how to trust his human companions! His new family will need to have lots of toys to keep Ludwig busy and a gentle and patient attitude to encourage him during his adjustment period.

Monty
Breed: Domestic Short hair
Sex: Male Neutered
Age: Male Neutered
Disposition: Friendly but wary
@ Shelter: September 2009
|
|
Description:
Monty came into the shelter as a stray boy and the tears in his ears are evidence of a rough start to life. Now that he is in off the street, this thankful boy is ready to settle down with a nice and caring family who will treat him right. Despite his tough looking exterior, Monty loves being brushed and kneading his human friends with his front paws. He is still a little unsure of being touched in more sensitive areas like his tummy and back end, making it important to move slow with Monty so he can be sure that his new family is one he can trust.

Gadget went to a foster home for quite some time, he was well socialized and was exposed to other cats and a dog as well. Gadget can have a little bit of attitude when he is in his cage, but once he is out and playing around he is quite affectionate! He will need a little bit of time to settle into his new home. His new family will need to work with him a little to help adjust quicker!! Gadget should go to a home with older children and a family with lots of love to give!!!

Bonsai

Sex: Female
Age: Approximately 8 months
Disposition: Playful
@ Shelter: 11/22/2009
|
|
Description:
Although most kittens play rough, Bonsai can be especially mouthy at times. We are looking for a home with children 10+ for her as her play style can be too much for younger kids. Additionally, though she seems very self-confidant in her cage, that is a place where she is comfortable. Once she is out of that area, she can be a little skittish and nervous, so will require a family that understands she will need some time to settle in.

Hilary
Breed: Domestic Short Hair- Black
Sex: Female Spayed
Age: Approximately 7 years old
Disposition: Friendly
@ Shelter: July 2009
|
|
Description:
Hilary was surrendered to the OMHS in July of 2009. Her original owner had passed away, and the person who took over ownership found she didn't always use the litterbox. Since being at the shelter, she has been checked for any bladder issues, and none were found. This means that she most likely was urinating outside of the box due to stress. The loss of her owner as well as a change in environment can be a lot for an older cat to handle! We are looking for a low stress home for this sweet, affectionate girl to spend the rest of her days. This means no other animals, and no children, as both of these can increase a cats stress. She will need a long confinement period when she gets home, to ensure she uses her litterbox properly. Hilary is very friendly, and will make a great companion for anyone willing to give this girl a chance.

Description:
Alinghi came to the shelter as a stray in Debember of 2009. Since then, he's been slowly warming up to the volunteers and staff at the shelter. He can be a bit shy, and tends to be quite tentative of his surroundings when first in the socializing rooms. Once he gets a chance to explore- he's a very curious boy- he calms down and is ready for some pets, and especially some brushing. His favourite passtimes are of the quieter variety, such as sitting quietly looking out the window, and sleeping next to you. You won't regret giving this sweetheart a chance, if you would like to see him out of his cage, please ask at the front desk.
